Welcome to Colin's Corner
For
those of you who are reading this for the first time welcome
to Colin’s Corner. My name is Colin Allyn and this is my
first year being involved with SAFE. You might wonder why I
deserve my own space on this website. What qualifications do
I have? I am not a teacher, doctor, counselor, or social
worker. Like you, I am a parent of a child with special
needs. My son is ADHD and middle spectrum autistic. He is 17
years old now and he is in high school and he has come a
long way there is still a lot of work left to be done. It
has been a long and sometimes difficult journey, but as
someone once told me a special needs child just needs a
little more patience and a lot more love.
It was a difficult time dealing with my son’s condition. It felt like I was fighting an enemy that I could not see or feel. I was helpless, and his grades were falling. He was becoming more introverted, and would spend more and more time in his room with his games. He was not maturing at a normal rate. The other kids made fun of him and he felt like he did not fit in. I promised myself that if I ever found a way no other parent would go through what I did. Through making the contacts that I have we will put as much information as possible in front of you. We will also offer you a forum to ask questions to a respected school psychologist. Alone we struggle helping our children through their adolescence and into adulthood. But together we can make a difference in their lives. At a school function for my son one of his teachers gave me a magnet with these words on it. I feel they are true now more than ever.
“A Hundred years from now…It will not matter what my bank account
was,
the kind of I lived in, or the kind of car I drove…
but the world may be different
because I was important in making a difference in the life
of a child.”
I ask you now to take a leap of faith. Join me on this journey of enlightenment and together lets make a difference in our children’s lives. If we can help one child break away from the TV set and come out into the light this will all be worth while. Their making lasting friendships, build self-confidence will be a priceless difference in their lives.
